Here is a good article with some tips on keeping your data secure.

The Center for Strategic and International Studies recently released a study that revealed businesses lose $100 Billion every year due to data crimes.

Make sure your company are using some of the best practices included in this article:

  1. Passwords: Verizon’s study showed that 76 percent of data breaches involved weak passwords. Everyone in your organization should be following protocol for strengthening and updating passwords. If necessary, set regular calendar reminders so your team remembers to update regularly.
  2. Mobile device use and BYOD (bring your own device): The more access points to company data, the more opportunities for cyber criminals to steal it. If your team works from mobile devices (their own or the company’s), enforce strict guidelines for locking those devices, updating operating systems, and maintaining antivirus software.
  3. Antivirus measures: Antivirus software isn’t just for computers anymore. Mobile viruses have exploded in the last year, and unprotected devices could easily become infected, exposing any sensitive data their users access. It’s also a good idea to review with your staff how to identify (and avoid) viruses and spam.
  4. Access to sensitive data: In small businesses, it’s common for everyone to collaborate on everything. But the more people who have access to sensitive data, the more likely it is to get into the wrong hands. Grant access only to those team members who need it, and train those with access on how to protect sensitive data.
